Need help getting started on a research project?

You’ve come to the right place.

  1. Study smarter. First, carefully review your assignment.
  2. Understand the research process shown below.
  3. Start with an encyclopedia to get an overview of your topic. Note important keywords and related topics for future use.
  4. Consider using a Libguide on your subject that contains quality links, sources, and websites selected by research experts.
  5. Find a book on your topic in the college’s library collection.
  6. Try using important keywords to locate fact-checked periodical or newspaper articles on your topics.
  7. Evaluate what you find for credibility and authority.  Revise your search terms and search again if needed.
  8. Cite your sources properly.  Try the Writing Center's MLA citation help.

One of the obstacles that I had to overcome was breaking the language barrier. Another obstacle I faced was financial hardship. As I completed my classes at AHC, I had to work in many part-time jobs such as a math/science tutor for the college tutoring center, night shift clerk for a local grocery store and vegetable cooling. Also, the MESA program and the STEM Center, not only supported me academically through resources such as access to books and computers, but also through working with students with interest in mathematics, science and engineering.
