Peer Coach Highlight

Lizbeth Pinon-Sosa

WLizbethhat is your role at CAN/TRIO?
My role at CAN/TRIO is to guide and support students in their academics and personal life. My number one priority are my peers - I support them by assisting with scholarships, resume/jobs applications, and listening to them. My role is to give ‘student to student’ advice that can be different than that of a staff members.

Please share one of your best CAN/TRIO experiences (a time you felt like you really made a difference).
One of my best CAN/TRIO experiences was when I helped a student get through a difficult stage in their life. The student was feeling down and alone and I was able to provide support to the student. I also taught the student time management which helped the student relieve stress in trying to balance work, school, clubs, and sports.

Finish the sentence. “If I could do one thing to make students’ lives better, I would…”
If I could do one thing to make students’ lives better, I would motivate students to further their education and encourage them to make connections with professionals who are in their major of study.

CAN Success Story

Mariela Martinez

Mariela Martinez
Mariela came to the U.S. when she was 13 years old. She graduated from a local high school here in Santa Maria and began her college career at AHC in 2008. Mariela's academic and career goals are to master the English language and give back to her community as a social worker. She knew she would transfer to a university and pursue a Bachelor's degree, so she applied to College Achievement Now (CAN) to receive transfer counseling. While at Hancock, Mariela also participated with the "green" club, Cal-SOAP, EOPS and volunteered at her church and local charities. She is now attending Fresno State as a junior and plans to graduate in 2014.
